He put a .45 in his mouth and pulled the trigger — and by God's grace, it didn't go off.
Matthew Headden spent over two decades trapped in alcohol, cocaine, meth and nicotine addiction. He describes himself as rebellious, arrogant and self-centered, drinking 30-40-50 drinks at a time, using 2 1/2 eight balls a week, and once waking up on a plane to Cancun with no memory of how he got there.
Five years before his surrender, at his lowest point, Matthew put his 1911 .45 in his mouth. "I can still taste that steel," he says. He pulled the trigger — and it didn't fire. Three and a half years ago, after another weekend lost to drinking, he was driving back to Columbia, SC at 4:15 AM listening to "Offering" by Third Day and prayed, "God, I know I have a problem... if you would give me a sign, that'd be really rad." Five hours later his attorney called about a 3-year-old DUI case where he was "super duper guilty" — and said, "your case is dismissed." Matthew hit his knees in an alleyway and said, "I surrender. I'm Yours. Never again." He hasn't touched alcohol or cocaine since — no meetings, no program.
Today Matthew leads Temple Keepers with his wife Leah, helping Christians live disciplined lives through movement, nutrition, sleep and stress — because "we don't have an obesity epidemic in the church, we have a stewardship epidemic."
